Valid points in the posts above.
However, it was a fun to watch and in all honesty I think the sport needed a day with a mixed result. My glass is currenlty empty because I've drunk all my vino, but with my glass half full hat on how about this!!!
McLaren a clear, sustainable third in the constructors championship! Every cloud has a silver lining

Is this correct though, I'm not so sure? The Stewards must know what penalties are applicable, they don't just make them up on the spot? I downloaded the 2020 sporting regs from FIA website to check for myself, but I lost the will to live after page 1. Still have no idea what the appropriate penalty for entering a closed pit lane is. I thought at the time being sent 20 seconds behind the last car in the field was rather "harsh", but a ten second penalty would have had zero effect because LH would have pulled that sort of gap with ease.
I guess they had to apply some sort of penalty involving coming into the pits otherwise they would not get the desired order shake up? If you are right though Jody and it should have been a straight time penalty rather than a stop/go then it will have to go down as a biased decision made purely for the show. Poor if that is the case, but we still got to see some action so not worth worrying about.
Actually Jody, I think you are wrong on this one

Article 28.14 of the Sporting Regulations that covers the pitlane closure states: "A penalty under Article 38.3(d) (which is a 10-second stop-go) will be imposed on any driver who, in the opinion of the stewards, entered the pitlane for any other reason whilst it was closed."
As Masi said: "The simple part is that there is no flexibility within that. The stewards had a mandatory penalty that they must apply."
That's fair enough IMO.

Hey guys, I was too tired to post last night, That was the best race Ive seen this year, not because a Merc didnt win but the unknown from the re start onwards.
Yeah we all know Lewis would have waltzed away out front should the incidents not have happened and taken yet another victory, but they did, and that turned the race on its head with us seeing some great racing and some much/long needed excitement out front, Great win for Gasly....even if I was cheering on Sainz, and good to see Stroll getting another podium....only 15 points splitting 6 drivers fighting over "best of the rest" 4th position in the championship.
Masi’s pre-weekend event notes contain specific notes relating to the track light panels “displaying pit entry status”, including: “The light panel indicated on the pitlane map will display a flashing red cross if the pit lane is closed at any point during the race.”
.......there can be no excuses, its there in black & white and MANY other teams managed to abide by the ruling!
Masi said it was not actually possible to clear the Haas any other way....
“There’s actually not a gap in the fence there,” he said. “As the drivers and teams are all made aware, some of the openings are vehicle openings, some of them are just marshall posts.
“The ones that have the shorter orange band effectively are actually only a marshall post and the car could not fit in that area.
“So the only safe place to remove that was to push it down into the pitlane because there was no other opening available.”
The penalty was locked in early on because the FIA’s sporting regulations offer no flexibility and simply demand a 10-second stop-and-go for entering a closed pitlane.
“The simple part is that there is no flexibility within that,” said Masi. “The stewards have a mandatory penalty that they must apply.”
edit: ....oh and VB was completely crap this weekend!

I think most people would have seen Brawns column on Monday morning? Didn't we discuss it at length yesterday in the "F1 future visions" thread? When I saw the discussion in that thread I had assumed this article sparked it? I know Forza linked to a Benson article on BBC sport, but this is where it originated.
Anyhows, we've had that debate in the other thread and it looks like (from those who responded) very few want it.

Indeed. There's a race thread up for that one already. Link below in case anyone missed it.
