Race transcript (contreversial race or what)!!!

(19:01:37) Jody_Barton: Race is 10 mins away
(19:02:02) NeilP: Yes got it USA TV is really crap live watching espn now and up with the time
(19:03:09) Jody_Barton: Good good
(19:03:31) NeilP: What is your thoughts Jody
(19:03:47) NeilP: are*
(19:03:51) Jody_Barton: Thoughts on what?
(19:04:06) NeilP: The race are Ferrari the front runner
(19:04:23) Jody_Barton: Should be, but race pace it switches
(19:04:49) Jody_Barton: Tyre and break wear is critical and Ferrari seem more critical than Merc
(19:05:52) ChatBot: morini logs into the Chat.
(19:05:58) NeilP: I just wonder in race trim what Merc defecit to Ferrari will be on the straights
(19:06:03) Jody_Barton: We'll see. I think Seb needs a good start and a cracking first 5 laps because if Lewis is on his tail he could be picked off, but riding in hot air today could kill tyres and breaks.
(19:06:17) morini: Hi chaps. Just finishing off my evening meal before lights out
(19:06:40) Jody_Barton: Race pace in FP2 had Bottas ahead of the Ferrari's but Max ahead of them all
(19:06:58) morini: Not convinced tyres will be an issue. But it will be fun if they are!
(19:07:18) Jody_Barton: Obviously don't know where Lewis is, so he's a bit of a wild card, but all season he's be quicker than Bottas in race trim
(19:07:53) Jody_Barton: Morini, not necessarily an "issue" but with the heat keeping them in range will be hard
(19:08:01) NeilP: Bottas does have a good track (excuse the pun) record here
(19:08:25) morini: Yep, but no P2 running will be a bit of an unknows for him. I'm sure it'll be an interesting one. Don't see Ferrari sprinting off into the distance (but I could be wrong)
(19:09:29) morini: Can renault / Dr finish in P4? That would be a corking result. Don't think so personally
(19:09:30) NeilP: I am expecting an incident at the first corner maybe the third too. Lots of people wanting to get a fast start more than usual
(19:09:34) Jody_Barton: Max's tyre choice could be fun. I expect Hard and then Softs to push for the last 10 to 12 laps after rubbering in
(19:09:59) morini: Could be a thriller chaps Big Grin
(19:10:07) Jody_Barton: It could be
(19:10:17) Jody_Barton: Canada is always good
(19:10:27) NeilP: I think it will be good all through the field
(19:10:42) morini: I hope lewis's car isn't buggered. That didn't look good.
(19:10:43) Jody_Barton: Come on Danny Ric
(19:10:56) morini: Anti stall
(19:11:05) NeilP: Its got to be Medium/Hard right?
(19:11:43) morini: Yes Neil. The only way I think
(19:12:16) Jody_Barton: That's concerning for Lewis
(19:12:25) Jody_Barton: Hydraulic pressure
(19:12:27) NeilP: VERY concerning
(19:12:35) morini: Bono "you don't have a proble,". Oh err.
(19:12:41) NeilP: a DNF will open things up a bit
(19:13:03) morini: Don't say that! I want a fair fight all the way
(19:13:27) Jody_Barton: Lewis' car is hunting, onboard now
(19:13:31) Jody_Barton: Sounds rough
(19:13:31) morini: Phew. Good start by all
(19:13:38) NeilP: Big picture lewis big picture
(19:14:03) morini: Yep neil. A P2 is all he really needs here.
(19:14:19) Jody_Barton: I'm way behind logging out
(19:14:44) morini: Vettel looks like he's checking out even afer 1 lap. Go Lando!!!!
(19:18:31) morini: Yeah, race chat is no good if you boys are behind on the feed.
(19:20:58) ChatBot: NeilP has been logged out (Timeout).
(19:24:13) morini: Oh Lando :-(
(19:25:59) ChatBot: Jody_Barton has been logged out (Timeout).
(19:33:08) ChatBot: Antilochos logs into the Chat.
(19:33:21) Antilochos: Just the two of us?
(19:36:24) morini: Yes Anti, Jody and Neil were on here but the time lag was a problem
(19:37:14) Antilochos: So, what do you make out of the race?
(19:37:42) morini: We need a feed that is the same timing for everyone. Otherwise chat is a bit difficult.
(19:38:12) Antilochos: Lap 19 here
(19:38:15) morini: Well, slow burner. i think Ferrari have it covered at the moment.
(19:38:34) morini: Lap 20 here
(19:39:18) Antilochos: Verstappen is bringing it no matter where he is, so that is good. Renault is good today. And I like seeing Vettel/Ferrari in front for a change.
(19:39:46) morini: Shame about Lando though. I'd like t see a good McLaren result.
(19:40:47) morini: Yes, I won't mind if Ferrari win this one. Hamilton already has his eyes on th etitle. He isn't going to do anything stupid here I don't think.
(19:41:27) Antilochos: Well, I don't care much about personal results. But it is a shame, since it would be interesting for the fight with Renault.
(19:42:00) Antilochos: Hamilton has indeed focus on title, and rightly so.
(19:42:17) morini: This could be a good race toward the end.
(19:42:59) Antilochos: I don't see anyone else as Mercedes winning title, and within that team it will be Hamilton (we don't agree on Bottas, but we both know he does not win the battle with Hamilton, right?).
(19:44:16) Antilochos: Bloody hell, talking about it; Bottas in the best car there is, is 16 s behind!!
(19:44:44) morini: Probably not. He's been good this year so far. But Jody made the point that he's already getting tired. I like Valterri, but I don't see him doing it over a season.
(19:45:19) morini: I don't think it is the nest car here Wink The Ferrari is.
(19:45:24) morini: best
(19:46:02) Antilochos: It could be the Ferrari, but the margin would be slim. Team-wise, Mercedes is by far the best...
(19:46:19) morini: Yes, I agree
(19:47:13) Antilochos: By the way, Gasly will be in trouble keeping his seat if he does not progress fast. He should be in front of Renault
(19:48:10) Antilochos: Great pit Vettel.
(19:49:01) morini: Yep, Vettel wins now I think
(19:49:31) morini: Vettel will be 3 seconds ahead
(19:50:33) morini: Actually almost 5 seconds. Thet should have pitted Hamilton straight away
(19:51:06) Antilochos: Just saw Hamilton pitstop. Good, but Ferrari is in a better position.
(19:51:16) Antilochos: Will be interesting till end of the race.
(19:51:44) Antilochos: Agree that they should've pitted Hamilton straight away.
(19:51:51) morini: Yeo, it will finish Vettel, hamilton, LeClrec
(19:51:57) Antilochos: But that is us easy talking here.
(19:52:11) morini: Ttue Wink
(19:55:33) Antilochos: Haas is not doing so well this weekend.
(19:55:34) morini: If there are no safety cars then it finishes like this I think
(19:56:09) morini: No, but sainz is running 10th at the moment. I want McLaren to get some points
(19:56:54) morini: Vertappen will need to do some overtaking at the end. That should be fun to watch
(19:57:00) Antilochos: You could be right about current order. Saintz is doing well lately. To bad Red Bull lost him. Would be great to see him in the Red Bull
(19:58:28) morini: Yeah, I think Sainz is worth of one of the top three team seats.
(19:59:29) morini: Hamilton is cruisng up behind seb now. But I doubt he can pass him.
(20:01:20) Antilochos: You are a bit in front of me when it comes to the race, but I would not be suprised if he attacked Vettel. I still think Mercedes is the best car (even without the team being a factor).
(20:01:45) Antilochos: I like the Bottas vs Ricciardo fight.
(20:02:06) morini: Yes Anti. Damile is doing a great job there.
(20:02:28) morini: Dan ricc
(20:02:40) morini: But he's got him now.
(20:02:56) Antilochos: Don't tell!
(20:03:01) Antilochos: lol
(20:03:08) morini: Hehe. Sorry
(20:03:32) Antilochos: I know the Mercedes would always overtake the Renault. Even with Bottas driving it...
(20:03:40) morini: I'll shut up, but it;s close between the frint 2 now as well.
(20:04:06) Antilochos: Like I said, I do expect that.
(20:04:18) Antilochos: Hamilton could take it.
(20:04:48) morini: Nah, it's unlikely
(20:05:03) morini: But he is a lot quiicker on the hard tyre
(20:05:05) Antilochos: Gasly, driving 9th in a Red Bull. Christ...
(20:05:58) morini: Yes, I'm disssapointed in Gasly to be honest. I'd prefer Sainz in there
(20:06:00) ChatBot: Jody_Barton logs into the Chat.
(20:06:29) Antilochos: You know I do too
(20:06:33) Antilochos: Hi Jody
(20:06:40) morini: You still a long wat behind Jody?
(20:07:17) Antilochos: Lap 42 here
(20:07:24) morini: 43
(20:07:48) Antilochos: I'm catching up Morini...
(20:07:57) morini: Big Grin
(20:08:29) Antilochos: Next pit stops will be interesting.
(20:09:25) morini: Haha!! good one!
(20:11:16) morini: Oooohhhh, this is quite tense up front.
(20:11:54) ChatBot: NeilP logs into the Chat.
(20:12:17) morini: Hello again Neil!
(20:12:18) NeilP: I think mercedes tyres are goin g to be better than Ferrari
(20:12:38) morini: Looking exciting isn't it!!
(20:12:42) NeilP: I am on lap 46
(20:12:54) Antilochos: Same here Neil
(20:13:00) morini: Bit of traffic cominug too
(20:13:25) ChatBot: Jody_Barton has been logged out (Timeout).
(20:13:26) morini: 47 for me. I'll shut the fuck up Wink
(20:13:33) NeilP: lolol
(20:14:07) morini: Ooooohhhhhh, vettel. You lucky boy!
(20:14:55) NeilP: Been a good race so far!
(20:14:57) Antilochos: Damn Vettel was lucky
(20:15:20) Antilochos: I still hope this will be the first race this year a mercedes does not win.
(20:15:31) NeilP: I think his tyres are going!
(20:15:34) morini: Big Grin
(20:15:47) morini: I think so too Neil
(20:15:58) Antilochos: Again, That bloody Gasly, how did he manage to put himself all the way back?
(20:16:16) NeilP: I thought Vettel blocked but maybe he could not help it
(20:17:14) morini: If Vettel does win this he will be made to work for it. Stewards looking at vettels rejoining the track
(20:17:45) NeilP: He seems to ahve got back in control of his car
(20:17:48) morini: I think seb is in big trouble here. But great entertainmet
(20:17:53) NeilP: Tyre wise..maybe
(20:18:09) Antilochos: They should let Vettel keep his place.
(20:18:39) NeilP: Looking at That Vettel should take a penalty the slow motion showed he pushed Hamilton into the wall
(20:18:40) Antilochos: That is racing.
(20:18:47) morini: I thik so, but Ham is just much faster at the momebt
(20:19:06) morini: Nah, no penalty neil
(20:19:13) NeilP: I think Vettel will screw up before the end
(20:19:22) morini: He was on the limit
(20:19:53) morini: Lets see. Hamilton is locking up a lot now
(20:19:56) NeilP: I dont think they will call one
(20:20:54) Antilochos: The thing that stands out the most for me; Saintz should be in Gasly his seat!
(20:21:00) morini: I think Vettel will bring it home now.
(20:21:13) NeilP: Yes I think Hamiltons tyre have gone too
(20:22:19) Antilochos: I say Gasly will loose his seat this year.
(20:22:27) morini: Bottas is quick now though. So that car is certainly quick
(20:22:30) NeilP: For hamilton to win it will require a Vettel mistake which is very possible
(20:23:43) morini: I think he has it under control now Neil. Lewis is dropping back a lot, reckon he's settled for p2.
(20:24:11) Antilochos: P2 is good enough for Hamilton at this stage of championship.
(20:24:11) morini: Almoast 2 seconds again.
(20:24:47) morini: P2 is a great result. He's way out in front WDX wise
(20:24:53) NeilP: Right he will extend his lead. Hard to know what to make of the performance
(20:25:51) morini: I think Vetel was luck there though. He made another mistake under pressure (but got away with it)
(20:26:06) morini: 5 second time penalty for Vettel!!!!!!
(20:26:22) NeilP: Magnussen is such jerk if I was Steiner over the radio I would have told him if he did not stuff it into the wall it would be a different story
(20:26:31) NeilP: I agree with it
(20:26:31) morini: And he is 3 seconds ahead at the moment
(20:26:35) Antilochos: Morini, don't tell!
(20:26:44) morini: Shit. Sotty
(20:26:52) morini: sorry
(20:27:05) NeilP: He absolutely pushed Hamilton into the wall
(20:27:21) morini: Yes, I agree, But it's a bit harsh!
(20:27:41) Antilochos: That is hard on Vettel if you ask me. Sure, I like to see any other car win than a Mercedes (and I'm a Mercedes fan), but come on, it is racing.
(20:28:22) morini: Kubica laped thre (*three*) times! He needs to go
(20:28:30) Antilochos: Fucked up the race for me. I will hate the outcome now...
(20:28:38) Antilochos: Kubica is a joke.
(20:28:48) NeilP: Vettel could still win Anti
(20:29:10) Antilochos: No, he can and will not.
(20:29:16) Antilochos: can't
(20:29:50) morini: Well, I think it's shit, would rather see Lewis win on track. But he was past apart from Vettel veering him into the wall.
(20:29:57) Antilochos: All Hamilton needs to do is keep close
(20:30:12) Antilochos: So much easier than overtaking.
(20:30:53) morini: Very true. Vettel really pisse doff, buty *he* made that mistake under pressure.
(20:31:07) NeilP: The thing everyone has to ask themselves is did vettel s actions stop Hamilton from getting past and it obviously did
(20:32:18) NeilP: He just confirmed it in his own message if I had stayed on the inside he would have passed me....EXACTLY!!!!
(20:32:21) morini: I'm a it conflicted.
(20:32:24) Antilochos: I don't know. Vettel didn't hold Hamilton back on purpose. If Hamilton choose another line, he would pass
(20:32:49) NeilP: Why should another drivers mistake affect another performance
(20:32:56) morini: TBH Lewis has looked fater all race.
(20:33:01) Antilochos: Because it is racing
(20:33:07) NeilP: He has nowhere to go anti he was up against the wall
(20:33:08) morini: faster (and fatter!)
(20:33:14) NeilP: IE on the racing line
(20:33:19) Antilochos: A mistake also has a positive effect.
(20:33:59) morini: Vettel had no choice, he could have left space but *knew* he would lose the position. So he squeezed him and got a prnalty.
(20:33:59) NeilP: I am assuming Ferrari will appeal after the race Is it appealable Morini?
(20:34:05) Antilochos: It keeps it interesting, not that sterile (something F1 is becoming).
(20:34:17) morini: Nope, can't appeal in race decisions
(20:34:41) NeilP: Thank you
(20:35:06) morini: Lewis looks like he could win it on the track, to be honest.
(20:35:46) NeilP: I dont know whether I even risk going past Vettel
(20:36:04) Antilochos: That fucking 5 seconds really took away all enjoyment for this race. Always disliked the stewards, but this...
(20:37:15) NeilP: Geez Leclerc may finish second yet
(20:37:25) morini: Well, I can see both sides of that argument, Hamlton ttl should have been past given that massive mistake Vettel made.
(20:38:02) NeilP: I wonder if Vettel is backing Hamilton into Leclerc
(20:38:19) NeilP: Hes too far back
(20:38:42) morini: Bottas pitting for a fast lap tilt.
(20:38:50) NeilP: Yes I dont think Hamilton is going to try and pass
(20:39:38) morini: Not enough lasp to back Lewis into LeClerc
(20:40:10) Antilochos: This race is screwed for me. Agree that Hamilton should be able to pass on that mistake, but on the other hand it is racing. Take your moment, or not. It all is about that split second and this is not how it should end.
(20:40:57) morini: If Vettel hadn't made that mistale we wouldn't be having this discussion. In fairness, it's his own fault.
(20:42:08) NeilP: Right that is forgotten
(20:42:39) Antilochos: They neutralize the human component like that.
(20:42:49) morini: Som Vettel third!
(20:42:50) Antilochos: that is how F1 is loosing fans
(20:42:52) NeilP: Great drive by the Renaults
(20:43:31) morini: Disagree Anti, it was harsh but he made a mistake under pressure. Top dirvers don;t do that. It was his own fault.
(20:43:47) morini: Sorry, Vettel was second.
(20:43:54) Antilochos: Like I said; human component is what is missing in F1 today.
(20:44:10) NeilP: Vettel 3rd!!!!!
(20:44:39) Antilochos: Even if there is a bit of human acting, the stewards kill it. F1 will die as well like this. Anticlimax for me.
(20:44:49) morini: Lewsi - "not the way I'd want to win, but I;d have been past him". That is the fact of it. I do have some sympathy.
(20:44:53) NeilP: I have some sympathy but why should another driver suffer for anothers mistake surely that is the point of Penalties
(20:45:08) morini: Tep
(20:45:11) morini: Yep
(20:45:31) Antilochos: I said it before; it is racing. Things happen.
(20:45:32) morini: I've had a lot of red wine, by the way. Sorry about the typing!
(20:46:06) Antilochos: If you take all those things out, wich is happening in the last couple of years in F1, it will become a dull robot race.
(20:46:19) Antilochos: I'm on whisky by the way...
(20:46:32) morini: Contreverial, but that is the end of Valteri Bottas challena as well, in my opinion.
(20:46:44) morini: Good lad Anti Smile
(20:47:28) Antilochos: Bottas and Gasly need to give their seat to better drivers. Santé.
(20:48:03) morini: 7 wins at Montreal fot Hamilton as well. Equals Schumacher
(20:48:31) Antilochos: I'm out. Going for another good glass of bruichladdich.
(20:48:41) Antilochos: See you guys around.
(20:48:57) morini: take care anti

That was some nasty atmos in the cool down room. I can understand it, but he'll look at it tomorrow and think "if I didn't crack under pressure I would have won". He blew it himself, lets not beat about the bush.

[edit]

A lot of tension, I enjoyed that race. Mercedes were quicker in the race (as we all thought they would be).

If anyones interested there is a poll on sky, 70% think the penalty was jusified. To be fair, if Vettel joined the track in a safe way he would have been second on the track. I hate to beat up on him as he was superb in quali, but he *does* make mistakes when pressurised.

This is going to divide down team lines I am afraid. I am trying to be neutral but maybe I cannot be.

One thing I will say its a good job his team got him to the Podium or there would have been major fines and possible penalties coming Ferrari's way. Binotto finally gets something right!

Lot of Ferrari fans up in arms. I love a bit of controversy me.

Anyway, don't overlook the fact that Lewis has equalled a long standing record today. I hope when Lewis wins 8 at Montreal to go one better than the great Michael Schumacher it is in better circumstances Wink

1) Seb was forced into yet another error by Lewis.

2) He did block Lewis in how he re-entered the track.

3) Technically the decision to give a time penalty was correct.

4) But where the hell was Seb meant to go?

5) I don't agree with the decision, and I'm not going to debate it because things will get too heated.

Whole thing is a shame, because it overshadowed an otherwise great race between Seb and Lewis, I think Lewis had the quicker car today, but I'm not sure he'd have found a way past. Just feels a bit deflating.

Well it was nice to see someone else leading a GP, for the limited time I could watch the "show". Wont be seeing that for a while. Back to Merc favourites.

My previous sig was obsolete, McLaren ain't disappointing Heshy no more.
