Circuit of the Americas.

Is the circuit up to running an F1 race? The MotoGP community think the surface is dire. Who has the form to come out on top in 2021?

Probably marginal this year from what I've read elsewhere. The underlying problems can't be "fixed" by resurfacing either as the whole place would need digging up to put a deep solid substrate under the track. The whole area suffers from subsidence due to the soil, flatness of landscape, heat and occasional heavy rain. In the wet the surrounding area is like a huge bog, which I know from experience of the outlying car parks!

Damn shame they didn't build this circuit properly (or somewhere else entirely) because it is IMO the best of the modern Tilkedromes and right up there with the best circuits F1 has ever had. Why they built it where they did is a mystery, but no doubt money had a say. I'm surprised the place hasn't gone bust already.

COTA addressing bumps for F1 race in wake of MotoGP problems.

Some of the bumpy areas of the Circuit of the Americas in Texas are being smoothed out ahead of Formula 1’s United States Grand Prix.

COTA boss Bobby Epstein told Motorsport.com prior to the work: "We're actually closing the track for most of December and half of January to fix the problems. We did some of the repairs last year before MotoGP, so I wouldn't say we'd have to do the whole thing.

"Certainly it will involve the entire back straight, the pit out and part of Turn 1, there's a part of a hump before Turn 9, Turns 18-19. So it's pretty extensive. I know what the bill is!"

Despite that effort, bumps remained an issue at the recent MotoGP event, where riders complained throughout the weekend, and issued an ultimatum that they wouldn't return to the venue next year if much-needed safety works were not carried out.

Motorsport.com understands the most recent tracks works were done without supervision from a specialist, which meant the job was not done correctly.

Like Morini says with where its been built this is just another temporary attempt to fix the problem.

Yeah its also my favorite Hermann Tilke track.    Cool

Yeah, I heard there were corners cut during construction and that the guy who owns it is a bit of a dodgy dealer. Sounds like you've been there yourself. Do you live in the US?

No mate, I don't live in merkin land. We do have an expat who frequents the board though. You'll recognise him because he spells colour "color" and eats 10 Big Macs per day Wink

We went over to the Austin race a few years back. My other half arranged the trip for a milestone birthday.

Hey, I only eat 8 a day no need to exaggerate Morini!!!!

I love this race track and I am sad it is deteriorating so fast. I have never been to a live F1 race and I guess this is my most obvious choice (Trust me I will never go to Miami to watch a car park race) for sure seeing a race live is high on my bucket list (ranking just underneath a night with Anna Kournikova)

How about Montreal? Not too far for you and one I'd like to do myself if flying is ever viable again.

I can recommend that one for a trip myself. Went a couple of years back and thoroughly enjoyed the week we were there. The race was a bit dull to be honest but the venue, the city and the whole atmosphere was excellent. We also met with family whilst there and it was definitely one of the best few days away i can remember.

Looking forward to the weekend that will actually be in my time zone! I have enjoyed this season so far it has been a lot more competitive than perhaps expected at the very start. Not enjoying the banter between Red Bull and Mercedes. I know it is just sport and I know it is the 2020's but I subscribe to something my Father drilled into me years ago. Let your play do the talking, keep your mouth shut tight.

Not too sure who has the upper hand here. One would think Mercedes; their car has looked super fast last few races and I think Hamilton would have won the last race by a country mile had he been on pole. So whose car is better in the corners I wonder, I still think Red Bull has a slight edge. That said I would call this a power circuit and also one of Hamilton favourites and most successful race venues.

For sure any mistake by either of the top two teams or drivers could be hugely detrimental at this stage of the season and with points being so close there is no room for major errors. I dont want to see any mechanical failures or coming together between any of the Red Bull or Mercedes drivers.

Not going to take anything I see in any practice session seriously unless its a total wipe out of a car or a penalty. There is just way too much room for interpretation and that seems to have been even harder to filter out this season. Qualifying will tell us the truth of the situation.

Bottas to take ANOTHER new ICE for this race. That does not look good for Hamilton.

That will be a 5 place grid penalty as opposed to a 10 place unless he takes additional components
