Qualifying

The main issue I would have with one car one lap is the potential for the track conditions to change, admittedly if you sent them off at say 15/20 second intervals it would be maybe doable but just look at what happen in Hungary this season.

I must admit I like the current format they got something right and in my opinion fair to all.

I've purposely avoided commenting on this thread for fear of starting a shit storm. I won't comment on the original post, but I will comment on yours Neil. Im my opinion the current qualy format makes F1 worth watching. It is the highlight of the race weekend for me. When Bernie stuck his oar in at the start of last year it almost wrecked a superb spectacle.

Don't mess with what isn't broken! I enjoy qualification so much I genuinely worry about keeling over and pegging out. Anybody got any betablockers?

Hey Morini, do you remember that time in Singapore, 2018 I think it was, when Lewis Hamilton did a 1:36.0 to take pole? That was some lap. I'll have to see if I can dig a video of that lap out.

Haha - very good M - but I think you mistook my original post, for what it was, the vid I posted is titled, "why is Lewis Hamiton so fast"

which goes into some detail, as to why, and today he was Mega (again) - there is no doubt in my mind he is one of the best ever, no doubt at all, and there never was on my part, the other reason for posting the thread, was to see if others had some great memories, or vids of past glories. And I agreed with Jody - that comparing stats with previous generations is a lost cause, it's impossible

and Vettel just proved again, he is just not on the same level, I think today was a body blow for him and SF for the title.

But I will say this, I think Max's lap today, 0.3 off I think? with some gremlins in the car (and a Renault engine) was - dare I say it - "maybe equally as incredible"

question marks remain over his race craft at times, but I think he just confirmed that he is indeed another quali specialist, and time is still on his side, to be the youngest ever Smile

Fog, Max is really rapid over one lap, lets not forget that the guy he is up against in RBR is no slouch and did Vettel in a head to head in the same car. Max is a one lap specialist too. However, coming into this weekend we were all talking about whether Ferrari or Red Bull would be the car to beat and assuming Mercedes would be best of the rest. Really we were looking to see in Lewis might have the pace to get ahead of one of the Ferrari's or Red Bulls. I think it is clear that all weekend RBR were sandbagging, so I think the lap from Lewis is still the best. Take nothing away from Max's lap though, that too was phenomenal. Vettel though... just got off Skype talking to my "paddock" friend and he's saying his employers thought the Ferrari was capable of a 1:35.7 this weekend, so to be 7 tenths off of Lewis, at a track that clearly still doesn't suit the Mercedes is quite frankly all the proof I need to consign the Seb or Lewis arguments to the bin. That Ferrari is a damn fine car, they've given Seb all the tools he needs to bring home his fifth WDC, sure last season they made as many errors as Seb, but this year it is all on Seb. He just can't take the pressure Lewis is applying.

Great performance from Hamilton. Really flawless. Bottas should be closer. I keep saying this, that guy is not good enough for such a beautiful fast car the Mercedes is.

Even more impressive to me was Verstappen. He keeps surprising me. With clearly a slower car that was a mighty performance.
I believe the kid also has the pace during whole race, not just a one lap specialist. But that car is not fast enough, he may call himself lucky if he manage to keep that second spot or even third.

GP Italy seems to be a hard blow for Vettel. He is not performing. Just can't say anything else about it. Still, I expect him tomorrow right up there in the fight for the win.

Disagree with this statement, their long run pace on Friday evening was actually the fastest of the top 3 on the Hypersofts, which the Ferrari and Merc seemed to chew through. The Softs they were also quite quick on, as were Mercedes, have no clue about Ferrari as they haven't run them. On the Ultrasofts we'll have to wait and see as well. But in race trim there was an argument to be made that the two Red Bulls looked the quickest. So I think starting P2, he has every chance of maintaining that position in the race, and maybe even going one better. I'm certainly not ruling Max out, in fact I have a sneaky feeling he'll win tomorrow if he keeps it clean.

I'll refer you to my post on the race thread - Jody, and I know you think EJ is a twit - as a commentator - LOL - but if you check out his C4 piece on the Scuderia, I think you'll agree with pretty much everything he says Smile

I actually think EJ is very knowleagable, but his problem is he feels shafted by the sport and mistreated and I think he has a chip on his shoulder. This chip sadly does get in the way of the valuable stuff EJ knows, and says, but I have just read what he's said about the Ocon situation, and that tallies with what I've been told. He was apparently lined up for both Haas and Sauber it seems, but the parent team said no. If I were the FIA this'd have me looking at the Haas and Sauber Ferrari link ups. Seems like a dumb move from Ferrari if you ask me.
