Toro Rosso has never been a team afraid to do something different, and the Italian Grand Prix highlighted a design lead that has helped its straightline speed performance.

Like sister team Red Bull, Toro Rosso has been well aware that the power deficit it suffers means it has to do all it can with its wings to try to help boost its straightline speed performance.

While it did not go as aggressive as Red Bull in terms of the levels of downforce it ran at Monza, the team again opted for a unique DRS design element that has played a key part in helping keep it in the fight this year.

The DRS pod actuator (arrowed) is different to other teams in that it features a bespoke arch underneath it. Here is an example of a solution that is more commonly used elsewhere.

TR have introduced innovations to F1 before, and normally innovations the big boys copy. They've got some serious talent there and I've always had respect for what they do. They've been really good partners for Honda as well.

Carlos Sainz says he always felt Daniil Kvyat would make it back to Formula 1, with the Russian set to earn a third shot with Red Bull and its junior team Toro Rosso.

Kvyat was dumped by Red Bull before the end of the 2017 season after he struggled to respond to being demoted from the senior team the year before.
Sainz partnered Kvyat from the 2016 Spanish Grand Prix until the 2017 Singapore Grand Prix, with Sainz then leaving for Renault and Kvyat getting replaced by Pierre Gasly before being handed a one-race reprieve in the United States.
“I do have a bit of a personal feeling [about Kvyat] because I do feel Dany is one of the most talented drivers I've ever raced against,” said Sainz when asked by Motorsport.com about Kvyat’s possible return.

“When he left Formula 1, I don't know why, I had this feeling that he one day he would make it back.
“Every time I've been against him in all categories, he sometimes, somehow always finds a way back - back to performance, or back to F1, or back to the category, or back to the Red Bull programme, whatever.”
Kvyat has not raced since his point-scoring appearance at Austin last year, but was hired by Ferrari as a development driver and drove at Fiorano earlier in 2018.
Red Bull is lacking options for its junior team next season, with its own talent not yet ready or qualified to step up to F1.

It emerged over the Italian GP weekend that Kvyat, who has been described as more mature by Red Bull motorsport advisor Helmut Marko, has moved to the top of its list for Toro Rosso next season.

The Toro Rosso Formula 1 team has explained the problem that caused Pierre Gasly and Brendon Hartley to endure high-speed spins that ended in retirements from the Russian Grand Prix.

Formula 1 should impose an outright ban on bargeboards as part of its push to make cars look better in the future, reckons Toro Rosso boss Franz Tost.

As F1 owners Liberty Media continue to look at ways of improving the appearance of grand prix cars from 2021, Tost thinks that making the designs much simpler would be a positive move.

The current generation of cars feature hugely intricate bargeboards, as F1's 2017 aero revamp allowed huge bodywork freedom in the area in front of the sidepods.
Tost is adamant that if F1 is serious about making cars looks good in the future, then this is something that Liberty needs to clamp down on.

"With Ross Brawn, Pat Symonds and the specialists on the aerodynamic side, they know what to do just to get rid of all these additional aerodynamic devices - and then you have a clean car," Tost said in an exclusive interview with Motorsport.com.
"For example if I would write a regulation, and it would be totally easy, to get rid of all these bargeboard things and all these additional wings.

He had a pretty good run at the end of the F2 season (except the last race) it is cool to see another young prospect in F1. How good he is remains to be seen, I have a feeling either he or Kvyat will be a one year driver with the other making way for Dan Ticktum (assuming of course the kid grows up a little) in 2020.
