Mercedes bottom of the lap count

First day testing.

I'm surprised. Did they have reliability issues? Kudos Giovinazzi, impressive.

Apparently were testing new wastegate configuration, perhaps it buggered up the engine? Who knows. Normally Mercedes run and run, but not today. Supposedly prototype of their spec 3 engine in the car too. Maybe they got what they needed and called it quits, or maybe it didn't work out as well as they'd hoped and it blew a gasket. Either way, it's an in season test, so data is data and will have told them something.

Mercedes have confirmed a gearbox failure (yet another one) cost Russell running time yesterday. They're still trialing the new waste gate and spec 3 engine today, and it's seemingly going better today. They seem to be getting Russell to set specific lap times and running a program. Giovinazzi is impressing again driving for Sauber this time. Setting some good times and working through his program. He needs a drive.

Well that seems more like it. 116 laps on day 2 and a new unofficial lap record for Russell on the Hypersofts:

I logged on to say exactly the same thing. Well done George, you've done your prospects no harm at all.

I've just seen he pumped in a fair few laps on the Hypersofts too all around the mid to late 1:15's which is damn impressive. Have to say Giovinazzi in the Sauber was also mightily impressive today by the looks of things, did a nice long consistent stint at one point... and Norris quicker than Vandorne was. There are some very talented drivers waiting in the wings for an F1 seat methinks.

Me too! And quite a few Brits as well. Love to see a few more come through.

There are a plethora of Brits, the weird thing... they all cite Lewis as their "hero" / reason for getting properly into racing. Schumacher said you knew it was time to consider retiring when young drivers told you that you were the reason they got in a go kart. Still with Norris, Russell, Ticktum and others British F1 drivers are in safe hands. I can honestly see all of them being capable of WDCs. They're all rapid and stupidly brave.

Lando already said those comments were taken out of context I'm afraid LL. He also said that 'no driver' was his idol, but that he looked up to Lewis and admired him greatly.
