Renault investing as much as they are only bodes well for them and the sport. I really hope they take another clear step forward as a team in 2019, that'd be great.

It sure does Jody. They have had a massive overhaul, and key to it being a success is getting their correlation spot on. With so many changes there is the huge rely on those numbers being right, if they aren't, there could be monumental failures on track.

Like you say, its a huge positive drive by Renault to get amongst the front. Having the confidence to make such changes bodes well for the teams ambitions.

Renault has announced several changes to its senior Formula 1 structure on both the engine and chassis side, which includes the addition of an ex-Ferrari and Mercedes specialist.

Christophe Mary, who held a senior role in Ferrari's F1 engine project between 1994 and 2007 and then spent another four years in a similar capacity at Mercedes, will join the staff at Viry from August 1.

He has most recently worked as part of the French Groupe PSA conglomerate, leading the development of the Peugeot 208 Hybrid FE concept car before taking on the role of the Chief Systems and Powertrain Engineer in the manufacturer's motorsport arm.
Mary will be appointed as the Director of Engineering and will report to Renault's engine chief Remy Taffin.

Long-time Renault staffer Stephane Rodriguez is another appointment to a new role, and will likewise report to Taffin in his new position as Project and Purchasing Director within the tech department at Viry.

Renault has also announced a new role for ex-Mercedes man Matthew Harman, who joined the crew at Enstone last year after over 17 years with the Gemran manufacturer.

Originally appointed as deputy chief designer, Harman has been named Engineering Director and will report to tech director Nick Chester, who leads Renault's chassis development.

Mary, Rodriguez and Harman will all sit on the management board of the Renault F1 outfit.

Renault claims the new appointments will allow Taffin and Chester “to increase their focus on the performance of the chassis and engine while overseeing the entire technical program with internal and external stakeholders”.

I thought a shake up was coming at Renault, it has been long over due. They clearly need some form of shake up, and maybe even to replace Abitobul.

Might have a point about the large infrastructure changes causing blockages. To grow from 400 to 700 personnel is bound to cause problems unless the management are really on the ball. I agree, we've seen no evidence of Renault race pace being anywhere near the top three.

They are clearly the worst of the 4 engine suppliers this year.

No longer behind Ferrari and Mercedes in the races!!!

I do NOT want whatever the fuck Cyril is on. It clearly causes brain damage. What GPS traces has he been watching, because that is not what I've seen on the traces. Most say Ferrari and Mercedes in races are much of a muchness, with Honda a little bit behind and Renault a further chunk behind. Delusional.

Renault is considering building a 'qualifying' car for 2020 as part of its effort to move up the order in Formula 1.

As teams begin evaluating what changes to make for next year, Renault has revealed that it is considering a shift of focus in how it prioritises single lap pace over long run form.

Renault F1 managing director Cyril Abiteboul has said the outfit is weighing up whether concentrating on a car that is best for qualifying rather than a car which can look after its tyres in the race could be a better option.

"I think we are looking at two or three changes that are totally possible to do at this point of time, and that can dramatically change the behaviour and the competitiveness of the car next year," explained Abiteboul.

"The first is aero efficiency, and the second is how you balance qualifying and the race, because in modern F1 it is all about qualifying.

"All tracks are almost like Monaco now, and there is a different pattern of development of the car if you want to focus on qualifying or focus on the race.

"It can be things like you how you are setting up your gear ratio. If you want to prioritise qualifying over the race you change your gear ratio.

"They are fixed in the regulations and that it is not something we can change for this year, but it is completely open for next year.

"Then, the last point, is the rake of the car.

This smacks of utter desperation to me. Yes, there are a few circuits where it is difficult to overtake. But, the successful teams have cars which are balanced between one lap and race performance. Whatever the capability of the car in low fuel trim it is probably more important to have drivers who can extract the maximum out of it on a Saturday. Danny Ric is a great race driver and one of the best in terms of race craft and overtaking ability, but I'm not convinced he is a mega qualifier.

If Renault take this route they are doomed to failure IMO.
