Did the halo save its first life this weekend?
#1

I know this is from F2, but given the halo is in F1 it has some bearing on this sport as well. I watched the F2 feature race live intially I couldn't see what had happened, but during the replays it became clearer. Not sure it saved Makino's life, but give the car slid up and over his head, the halo certainly prevented his head been hit at least by the spinning rear tyres:

Hard to judge without seeing any video of the accident, but the marks on the halo look nasty.
Still don't believe the halo saved his life. Sure prevented him from some damage, but again, it is hard to judge.
Don't know how the part of the car is called in English, but that piece of car where the halo stands on (highest point of the cockpit) is not damaged. Think this would've toke a lot of the impact wich now the halo did. You can see the scraps on that part further back, where there is no halo.

I'm not a fan of the halo, so maybe my judgement is not clear, but it would be some coincidence if the halo saves a man's life the first year it is introduced (while I can not even recall a deadly incident in the past that could be prevented by a halo).
Don't get me wrong, I'm glad the driver is okay and if that is thanks to the halo, long live the halo.

Here's the video of the incident, you have to wait until the end to see what happened, but I genuinely believe without the halo Fukuzumi's car ends up in Makino's cockpit:

The raised section around the drivers head you are talking about isn't actually designed to take at impact, it's actually a foam head rest / restraint that is designed to stop the drivers head from coming to an abrupt stop in a "lateral load" incident. Don't know if it "saved his life" but it did its job and stopped the car and most importantly the spinning rear wheels getting into his cockpit and making contact with his head.

Still hard to say, maybe even harder for me to judge now...
I know the part I talked about is part made of foam, but so are the bumpers on my car. They will take some of the impact I believe.

But back the accident, I agree that the halo did a good job here (and we will never know the outcome without a halo).

Yeah, I agree about not knowing the outcome without the halo, just thought it was worth pointing out. It certainly took the weight of the car on top of it, at quite a high impact.

Perhaps the car did just ride up the side pod of the car and not crossed the cockpit. However, should it have the Halo would of indeed done its job.

Just like the F1 crash, as scary as it was watching the Haas carrier back into traffic. There was a lot of relief in the knowledge the Halo was there. Head on collision was missed by inches, tyres still severed which is FIA main reason for the Halo.

Exactly Hesh, although the damage to Makino's halo certainly suggests it stopped a car entering his cockpit. Yes it was a totally freaky accident, but that's what it is there for.

Perhaps it is time other sports (and spectators) started using the halo Wink

Ahhaaaaa!

Are they going to try and sue now, ridiculous. If that other woman succeeds in her case, then I give up and you can say bye bye to all spectators at all sports.
