Superlicence points in practice sessions from 2020.

From 2020 practice sessions will carry points for drivers to gain their ‘superlicence’, according to a report from Autosport.

Current rules mean that 40 ‘superlicence points’ generated across three seasons are required for a driver to be able to earn their superlicence.

The single-seater junior formulas – F2 down to F4 all carry these points, while other major categories such as IndyCar and the World Endurance Championship are also included in the list of series.

Participating in free practice sessions on a grand prix weekend will become a new way to earn points from 2020. Drivers who haven’t earned 40 points can take part in free practice through earning a ‘free practice only’ superlicence, which only requires 25 points.

A racer who successfully completes 100km during a free practice session will earn a point per gp weekend, as long as they don’t incur any penalty points, but the amount a driver can earn is capped at 10 across three seasons.

The FIA have also announced that the new all-women’s W-Series will be added to the list of series which carry superlicence points.

Tut tut, naughty thread hijackers. Veering into the murky world of politics how very dare you. Nothing less than a complete and utter waste of life, has to be said. It must be bad if it takes F1B's "most depressing thread ever" off topic!

The long-running behind-the scene dispute over F1's 'new' logo appears to have reached its conclusion, with - as ever - only the lawyers being the real victors.

"Finally, the long-running saga had come to an end. That said, as is so often the case, the real winners are the lawyers, the costs of this lamentable logo ludicrousness sure to take yet another bite out of the 68% of the ever-decreasing profits the sport's ten teams 'share'."

F1 race director Masi open to racing rules change for 2020.   (Motorsport)

Formula 1 race director Michael Masi says he is open to the idea of rewriting the racing rules of conduct for 2020, if the sport’s drivers and teams feel that would be a good thing to do.

Many feel that F1 is now over-regulated and the spectacle is being ruined because drivers cannot race hard as they risk being punished by the stewards.

It is understood that the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association (GPDA) held a lengthy meeting at the French Grand Prix to discuss the situation, and there is some suggestions it will consider ways that the FIA’s International Sporting Code can be improved to allow more freedoms.

Masi met with drivers at Paul Ricard for his regular briefing, but is clear that despite the Canada controversy having brought up major issues, he thinks it would be wrong to try to fast-track any tweaks to the rules for this season.

However, he has not ruled out the possibility for changes to come in to force next year if it is felt things can be improved.

The FIA is ready to roll out more bespoke bollard lanes in Formula 1 run off areas this year in a bid to clamp down harder on drivers abusing track limits.

On the back of a growing debate about how to deter drivers from cutting corners, the FIA trialled more extensive use of lanes that directed cars around bollards at last weekend's French Grand Prix in a bid to slow down anyone who had run off circuit.

But F1 race director Michael Masi said that the plan now was to use the bollard solution at more tracks, following a request from the drivers.

Asked by Motorsport.com if it was likely the FIA would roll out the use of bollard lanes at more venues, Masi said: "On a case by case basis absolutely. It is something to be quite honest that the drivers have asked for.

"Following a discussion that we had in Canada at the drivers' meeting, we got here [to France] and there was a lot of run off out there, so it was prime situation and prime set of circumstances to actually try it.

Hamilton warns Liberty Media over Silverstone future.

Lewis Hamilton has warned Liberty Media risk stripping "all the history and culture" out of Formula 1 if historic circuits fall off the calendar, paying particular attention to Silverstone, which is yet to secure a spot on the calendar for next year.

Reports have suggested that a deal is close to being signed between Liberty and Silverstone to keep the track on the schedule.

The reigning F1 champion says it must remain.

"There are some really awesome circuits and Silverstone is one of those," said Hamilton.

"The UK is really amongst the foundation of what this sport is and if you start taking away the legendary races and it's all just new ones, you lose all the history and all the culture which is what Formula 1 is.

"So I truly believe they have to keep Formula 1 in the UK and particularly Silverstone, it's such an awesome track, such an awesome place. One of the biggest turnouts of all season. Can't turn your back on that.
